Search Engine Optimization
Hi Craig,

There are a few important things to know about Organic SEO. There are "On Page" Factors that have to be in place, in other words your site must be "Google Friendly" (I will do a post on my blog in the next couple of days and list the On Page Factors).

The keywords that you are optimizing for will have different levels of difficulty based on the number of competitive pages in Google and the sites that are at the top.

For example if you have to compete against sites like Realtor.com, Oodle.com, Truila.com or if you have a few older sites that are owned by the larger companies in your local market that have been there for years and have thousands of back links it will take longer for those keywords. The big keyword in Baton Rouge is Baton Rouge Real Estate.

And it's also very important to know the weight that Google now puts on back links, it's actually about 80% of what will cause you to rise to the top for the big keywords.

It is definitely attainable but it will take time and persistence and you really have some great opportunities with social media.

Great post Z.. but don't forget about the mechanics of a web page as seen through the eyes of a search engine. Certain coding and symbols are better than others as well as CSS, iframe, images composition, and etc. Each web building language (php, html, asp, xhtml..etc) has it's own merits as well as major downfalls. HOW to use each one is the key.

Finding the right balance and knowing which "works" the best help to get you to number 1.

Knowing the right combo and applying it to your web site makes a big difference.
An estimated 40% of SEO is site structure with 20% off site details and 40% technique.

If you are trying something touted on the web, chances are it's been done to death and Search Engines file it under "non-unique"

Question: Can anybody guess why G does not have a "local" section like Bing and Yahoo.. food for thought

Did you know..?

That if you are posting ads or social networking and putting in your links on sites that have a restricted robots.txt file.. you are wasting your time!

First.. what is a robots.txt file? It is a directive telling search bots what and where to search in and on the web site. Search bots need a clear and concise path from the home page to explore the path and structure of links and interior pages.

Here is a bay area classified ads robots.txt file restricting all robots from the home page. It may be good for exposure advertising a listing but as far as putting links for G juice.. be wary

User-agent: Lycos         <this talks directly to Lycos
Disallow: /index.php      <this tells Lycos no home page
User-agent: *                   <accck! this one tells all robots (bots) stay out.. * is universal ALL tag
Disallow: /index.php       </index.php,html,asp,shtml is universal home page unless the .htaccess file says diferently

To find out what a web site owner will allow, just type in http://www.WHATEVERSITE.com/robots.txt

If restricted access is found that is probably due to a .htaccess file that cannot be read in a browser. .htaccess is a special file that talks or interprets commands the server on which the website is hosted and can be used for a variety of functions. It sits usually in the root directory of a web site.

ActiveRain used this as a business model offering users that thought they were getting links proliferated in their blogs and comments to then offer agents to "pay" per month for "public" web access/exposure. Brilliant! ..but semi deceiving to the uninitiated. The pay per click ads were not evidently generating enough revenue. Agents think that when they post info and links it is automatically picked up or read by search bots by not knowing how the web works.

When some agents thought this was a no-brainer the blogs about their real estate biz and dogs and hobbies and what their kid did and personal stuff and etc.. got very diluted in the eyes of the SE's.. and actually dropped hard in ranking. Why waste all those gobs of points?? :)

Just stay informed..
