Tucked away in a quiet inner city neighborhood is one of Columbia's most special places: the University of South Carolina's Belser Arboretum. It's located east of Shandon in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood. This seven-acre tract has a long looping trail which makes the whole place accessible. Covered in wooden chips, the path goes uphill and downhill. It crosses a small wooden bridge, as well as a stream with four waterfalls. In the valley, there's a Zen garden with rock piles suggestive of a miniature Stonehenge. Volunteers have put up dozens and dozens of unobtrusive tags and plaques explaining it all. Unlike city parks, the arboretum is not generally open to the public. But on the third Sunday of every month, it opens its doors to the public for three hours. The Found Footage Festival is a one-of-a-kind event that showcases footage from videos that were found at garage sales and thrift stores and in warehouses and dumpsters across the country. We began collecting found videotapes in 1991 and since then, we have compiled an impressive collection of strange, outrageous, and profoundly stupid videos on VHS. We had found 90 minutes of needles in a thousand haystacks. We called it Found Footage Festival and it's at the Nickelodeon Theatre for one night only! 8 pm. Sunday, January 24. The Debut. The Koger Center for the Arts brings this gospel-filled event to the stage at 5 pm. Opening Friday, January 15. The Odd Couple. What begins as an “ordinary” Friday night poker game dissolves into an incredibly hilarious saga centered on Oscar Madison and Felix Unger. Oscar barely minds that his wife has divorced him because it allows him to host these Friday night poker games AND he never has to clean his apartment. Tucked away in a quiet inner city neighborhood is one of Columbia's most special places: the University of South Carolina's Belser Arboretum. It's located east of Shandon in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood. This seven-acre tract has a long looping trail which makes the whole place accessible. Covered in wooden chips, the path goes uphill and downhill. It crosses a small wooden bridge, as well as a stream with four waterfalls. In the valley, there's a Zen garden with rock piles suggestive of a miniature Stonehenge. Volunteers have put up dozens and dozens of unobtrusive tags and plaques explaining it all. Unlike city parks, the arboretum is not generally open to the public. But on the third Sunday of every month, it opens its doors to the public for three hours. Smokers in Lexington County will have to put out their cigarettes when they usher in the New Year. A workplace smoking ban took effect Jan. 1 in all businesses and workplaces in unincorporated areas in Lexington County. Similars bans have also taken effect in the towns of Pine Ridge and Springdale. The new regulations make all workplaces including offices, restaurants and bars smoke-free. County Council Chairwoman Debbie Summers said "this is a health issue that affects everyone, and Lexington will be a better county because of it. The county won't hire extra officers to enforce the ban, but Summers said, enforcement will be complaint driven. Supporters expect customer complaints about smokers will make it work. Lexington County residents are urged to grind the greens again this year. All lights, decorations, tinsel and tree holders must be removed prior to disposing of the trees at the following locations: Crooked Creek Park at 1098 Old Lexington Hwy., Chapin (next to Chapin Middle School) is open daily 7:30a.m. - 11p.m.; Hollow Creek Tree Farm - 228 Windmill Road, Gilbert; Lexington County C&D Landfill, 498 Landfill Lane, Lex. Open Mon-Sat 7:00a.m. - 4:30p.m. Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, 5508 Sunset Blvd. (Hwy. 378) in Lexington; Seven Oaks Park, 200 Leisure Lane, (near the intersection of St. Andrews and Piney Grove Roads). No wreaths, garland, or other greenery will be accepted. Once ground into mulch, the public can pick up free mulch on Sat. January 9 beginning at 9a.m. until the mulch is gone. Husqvarna will invest more than $2.5 million in Lexington County, state and local officials announced last week. The SC Dept of Commerce, Lexington County & the Central SC Alliance said last week that Husqvarna will locate a parts distribution operation here and will be the principal tenant in a newly constructed building. Lowell Stoelting, Dir. of Parts Operations for Husqvarna said, "We are pleased to move forward with our plans for the new parts distribution center in Lexington County." "This facility will be an important part of our future growth. SC has long provided us with an excellent business environment and we look forward to continued growth in the state. Husqvarna will lease warehouse space in the Midway Logistics Park and will beging moving into the facility soon. Ladies thank troops with a taste of home - When Army wife Cindi Hennigan, Columbia USO volunteer and mother of a military pilot with over 27 months in Iraq, asked her Harbour Watch Community neighbor Nancy Edmonds to organize a cookie bake for troops being deployed to Afthanistan Nov. 25, Cindi was overwhelmed by her Harbour Watch community's response. Delighted to have an opportunity to demonstrate our gratitude to the 220 women and men unable to spend Thanksgiving with their families and friends, more than a dozen ladies happily baked a variety of homemade cookies to pass out to our troops. The ladies bagged more than 1300 cookies into 230 treat bags, putting a message of thanks into each one. The Town of Lexington will spend up to $200,000 on new police cars. Town Council approved using the funds from a capital improvements account to help update its aging police fleet. The funds could purchase seven or eight new vehicles. Replacing the cars is a safety and a maintenance issue. Older vehicles are not safe for use on the road and the officers need the best equipment that can be provided.

 Belle Chase is a Lexington SC Neighborhood that is in a great location directly off Old Cherokee Road. There was a great article in The State newspaper today about some of the area Christmas light displays around Irmo, Columbia, and Lexington today. It just so happened that I was headed out this evening with the family to check out a few of the ones listed in the article. In this area, there really are some great activities to get you in the Holiday mood. Not only are there some great light displays, but some great events like the Vista Lights, which kicks off the season each November, and The Holiday Market, organized by the Junior League of Columbia as a fundraiser to allow them to support local charities in the Columbia SC area. My kids especially enjoyed seeing the lights tonight at the Saluda Shoals park and the homes on Hope Ferry Road. Total cost for entrance was 10.00 and it was a great way to spend a few hours ! Some popular area attractions include the Lights Before Christmas at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. This beloved annual event with nearly a million twinkling lights and more than 350 handcrafted images includes photos with Santa, Jingle Bell bonfire marshmallow roast and snow! It runs nightly from 6-9p.m. through Jan. 3 (closed Dec. 24, 25 & 31) and costs $8 or $6 for ages 3-12. Another attraction is the Saluda Shoals Holiday Light on the River and a special event called the Nights of Wonder which runs through Dec. 23 from 6-10p.m. Children can take part in a hayride, roast marshmellows, ride the train, slide down the Winter Wonder ride, and visit with Santa. Admission to the Lights on the River is $10 for cars with a nominal fee for the crafts and concessions. Home displays include several homes in the Hope Ferry Road neighborhood of Lexington SC; and 108 May Morning Drive in the Spring Lake subdivision. In the Harbison/St. Andrews area at 258 Piney Grove Road the display includes a nativity, Christmas trees, large inflatable Frosty, Mr. and Mrs. Claus and more. In Gaston at 5320 U.S. 321 there are more than 15,000 lights plus other decorations; and in Cayce/ West Columbia SC there are 3 elaborate displays, 1616 Pine St. (Twilight Manor); 509 Moss Creek Drive and 302 Hudson Street in West Columbia. Here's another area update for you to take a look at. As usual, my source for all this great information is the great publication of the Lexington Chronicle. It has some great information this week that could impact your Lexington SC Home For Sale or Irmo SC Home For Sale. If you are buying a home in the Lexington SC or Irmo SC areas, I hope you find this information helpful ! $20.3 million in investments planned - Three companies plan to invest $20.3 million in Lexington County. The companies want the county to give them a 6% fee-in-lieu of taxes instead of the normal 10.5% industrial tax rate. Flextronics of America plans to invest $12 million in the Solectron Corp. complex in the Columbia SC Metro Airport Enterprise Park. The number of jobs this will create was not released. Flextronics designs, builds, ships and services electronics in 30 countries on four continents. Husqvarna Professional Products and Midway Logistics plan a $8.3 million investment, creating 33 new jobs here. Midway Logistics would lease Husqvarna a 176,400 square foot facility in the Lexington-Calhoun counties industrial park. They make forestry, lawn and garden and construction products. Lexington plans more parking downtown - Lexington Town Council voted to buy the old Lexington Interfaith Community Services property on North Church Street for future surface parking downtown. The town had set aside $2.3 million in 2007 for a parking structure to go along with a hotel, shops and restaurant that attorney Bert Dooley has been trying to finance. Monday the council voted to use $1.44 million to buy the North Church Street properties including the old LICS building in the former Liverman Hospital and use the remainder of the money to pave it for parking. $1 million for Chapin athletics - The Irmo-Chapin Recreation Commission wants to borrow $1.03 million to buy 30-40 acres for athletics in the Chapin area. The commission is retiring debt and would sell the bonds for a similar amount. This will not raise property taxes, sale Elizabeth Taylor of the Irmo-Chapin Recreation Commission. The commission has not yet identified the land. If we can buy it for less than the $1.03 million, we will use the remaining money for maintenance and repairs of the other facilities. County transit committee urged - County officials want government and business leaders to identify future public transportation needs. The public transit planning committee was recommended after the county held a transit summit at the Lexington Town Conference Center October 16. "Lexington County needs transit to address issues of growth, traffic congestion, economic development, air quality and quality of life," Lill Mood of Chapin wrote in a summary of the summit's findings for Lexington County Council. The summary included four recommendations: - County Council should appoint a committee of council members and citizens to explore solution.
- The committee would recommend to the council steps to take and means of accomplishing them.
- The committee would study Charleston County's methods of paying for public transit and road needs.
- The county should sustain the limited transit now serving the county.
48 unit senior complex planned for Lexington County - More senior housing is set to come to Lexington. Lexington Town Council gave initial approval Monday for a 48 unit senior apartment complex on Library Hill Lane behind the Lexington Library. Pebble Creek will offer apartments to anyone 55 years old or older, developers told council. An on-site beauty salon is also planned for the three story complex.

Friday, December 11-Sunday, December 13. Nutcracker. Columbia City Ballet’s holiday family tradition, Nutcracker, dazzles South Carolina audiences each season. Collecting the talents of more than 200 local children and 40 professional dancers, this award-winning Nutcracker has been proclaimed by The State newspaper “as close to perfect as you can get.” Experience it for yourself! St. Martin de Porres Catholic School will host its annual Christmas Bazaar this Saturday from 10 am-2 pm! There will be carriage rides and pictures with Santa, games, food, music and vendors.
